HOW TO MAKE DALGONA (WHIPPED) COFFEE - PLUS 3 FUN VARIATIONS!

I totally fell into the internet trend rabbit hole with this one! And I was pleasantly surprised at how easy, quick to make, and downright delicious it was!

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • 2 tablespoons of instant coffee

  • 2 tablespoons of sugar

  • 2 tablespoons of hot water

  • Milk (any kind)

  • Ice

Put 2 tablespoons each of instant coffee and sugar into a small bowl. I used Great Value Instant Decaf and regular white sugar. Heat up 2 tablespoons of water in the microwave (30 seconds or less should do it!) and pour it in the bowl. I used a hand mixer on the lowest setting to whip the mixture until it turned stiff, which only took about 1-2 minutes. Then, I poured some milk over ice in a large mason jar and spooned 3 scoops of the coffee mixture on top. Easy peasy! I even had plenty left over to make a second glass!

Pro tip: It’s super Insta-worthy just like that, so take your pic and share it with the world, but you’ll definitely want to make sure you stir it well before drinking! The finished product is thick and creamy, almost like melted ice cream!

You can see my original IGTV video below.

The classic original was so good, but I started wondering about flavor variations, so I put together a few more recipes that are just as easy, but with a twist! Remember, as long as you have equal-ish parts of the 3 main ingredients (instant coffee, sugar, and water), you can experiment with the rest!

SWEET CINNAMON DALGONA COFFEE

  • 2 tablespoons of instant coffee

  • 2 1/2 tablespoons of sugar

  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon

  • 2 tablespoons of hot water

  • Milk (any kind)

  • Ice

I made this pretty much exactly like the original with the addition of an extra 1/2 tablespoon of sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. I tend to like my coffee on the sweeter side, but if you prefer it to be less sweet, the added 1/2 tablespoon of sugar is totally optional. I used organic whole milk, but I think this particular variation would also be delicious with almond milk. This mixture seemed to take a bit longer to whip than the original, but still got to the right consistency within about 3 minutes.

BROWN SUGAR HONEY DALGONA COFFEE

  • 2 tablespoons of instant coffee

  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar

  • 2 tablespoons of hot water

  • Milk (any kind)

  • Honey (amount depends on your preferred level of sweetness - I used about 2 tablespoons)

  • Ice

I really wanted to see how this would work with brown sugar instead of white sugar. (Note: I whipped it for much longer than the original, but it never quite got to the same fluffy consistency. Must be the white sugar that actually causes the whipped effect!) I didn’t really think it changed the actual flavor of the whipped mixture, so in the future, I’ll probably just stick with white sugar. Once it thickened enough, I poured it over whole milk, stirred together and then added some local honey. Obviously, you can adjust the honey based on your preferred level of sweetness! I used about 2 tablespoons and it was perfectly rich and decadent - kind of like an iced honey latte!

VANILLA COCONUT DALGONA COFFEE

  • 2 tablespoons of instant coffee

  • 2 1/2 tablespoons of sugar

  • 2 tablespoons of hot water

  • Coconut Milk

  • 1/4 - 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract

  • Ice

Out of all the variations, this is my personal fave! I started off with the same whipped mixture (I added the extra bit of sugar again, because.. well, you know. 😉) and switched out the regular milk for coconut milk. I also added 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract. After I stirred everything together, I loved the way it tasted, but also felt like it could stand to have a bit more vanilla flavor, so I added another 1/4 teaspoon.

So, have you tried it yet or are you planning on trying it? I’d love to hear what you think, especially if you try one of my fun variations or mix up something special on your own! Come hang out with me on Instagram and let’s chat!
